The American Franchisee Association (AFA) is a national trade association of franchisees and dealers founded in February 1993. Fifteen thousand individuals who own over 30,000 franchised outlets in 60 different industries are members of the AFA. The AFA was formed to improve the business conditions for franchising generally, while working diligently to protect the economic interests of franchisees. The AFA accomplishes this goal by providing two additional avenues to resolve potential conflicts. First, the AFA constantly advocates the franchisee’s position. Second, the AFA communicates with federal and state lawmakers about the inherent imbalance written into the contracts governing the franchisor-franchisee relationship.
Background:
Major Areas of Concentration:
- Representation: The AFA represents the interests of franchisees to the media, the government and the public.
- Communication: The AFA publishes the AFA E-Newsletter for its members to keep them informed on recent legal decisions and operational issues of importance to small business franchisees. AFA’s Web Community provides an online forum for franchisees to communicate, buy and sell products and services, exchange ideas and post important notices.
- Networking: AFA members can network AFA Franchisee Leadership Summits held in Chicago. At the Franchisee Leadership Summit, the leaders of independent franchisee associations are invited to spend a day sharing their experiences and discussing issues of concern. Franchisees can also network on AFA’s Web Community through chat rooms, discussion forums and personal web sites.
- Legal Referrals: AFA’s Directory of Affiliate Members will put you in contact with some of the best franchisee lawyers in the country.
- Health Insurance: AFA provides group health insurance for its members through either: 1) a Mini-Med program 2) a self-funded program; or 3) an individual program.
